Critical Thinking in an Online World – Debra Jones

The twenty first century, an era of evolving information technology. A time of endless information and knowledge at our finger tips. It is this circuit highway that has the Librarian profession on the verge to extinction. Fewer students are visiting their local Libraries to reference information. We find ourselves having to be educated on how to resource this endless information.

Grammar school field trips to the library to learn the Dewy Decimal System are obsolete. No more thumbing through endless index cards only to find out that the book you need is a reference book and can not be checked out. One would have to spend hours reading while trying to absorb as much information possible. With all the new technology available, students can now research any topic or idea from anywhere in the world. Computer skills are a necessity in this time and age and children are now being taught how to utilize them for research. With so much information readily available, one can now use critical thinking skills to really uproot an idea or fact for accuracy in their research. Search engines like Google and Ask.com are the keys to the endless online world of information. I am anxious to see what the next wave of technology will bring to our future scholars.
